Pilates is a physical fitness system that had been created in the early twentieth century by a person named Joseph Pilates who had written a minimum of two books about his Pilates Method. These books are entitled Return to Life through Contrology and Your Health: A Corrective System of Exercising That Revolutionizes the Entire Field of Physical Education.

Joseph Pilates' method Contrology is concerning the manner in which the mind is encouraged to be used to control the muscles. The exercise program pays close attention on the core postural muscles which help to keep the balance of the body and are important for providing support for the spine. Pilates exercises are especially able to teach the student awareness of breath. They are able to also help to align the spine as well as strengthen the deep torso muscles that are important if one wants to reduce and prevent back pain.

A Little More On Joseph Pilates

Joseph Pilates was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in the year 1880 and was a German national but of Greek descent. He was an avid exercise enthusiast who was fond of skiing, gymnastics, diving, and a martial arts student who developed his body into a superb condition and was, in his teens, fitness charts model.

During the 1918 influenza pandemic, he was busy finding ways to rehabilitate bed-ridden victims and in doing so he was able to develop a series of movements which anyone could practice in closed confines. Later he began to train professional boxers among who was Max Schmeling, the famous heavyweight champion.

In the system, rather than performing many repetitions of each exercise, Pilates liked lesser and more exact movements that required control and form. As a result, he designed at least 500 specific exercises and the most often of these was the mat work that involved a series of callisthenic motions that did not need to use any weights or apparatus and could be performed on a padded mat.

Pilates believed very sternly that mental health and physical health were vital for each other. He created a method of total body conditioning that emphasized on correct alignment, centering, concentration, control, precision as well as breathing and flowing movements.

He called them The Pilates Principles that resulted in greater flexibility, strength, toning of the muscle, awareness of the body, more energy and better mental concentration. Furthermore, Pilates was also able to design five key pieces of unique exercise apparatus which would, according to him, help to produce better results.
