The phrase political left is usually used to describe a liberal or a Democrat. Generally a liberal was someone who believed in the human rights of the individual. They desired to reduce the influence of the Church or religious groups without defying the conventions of the Constitution. They were often associated with being the patriots of independence and would appear, on paper at the least, to be extra tolerant and more generous.
The political right alternatively would be used to describe somebody who was extra conservative in their outlook on life. If a hostile condition arose in the Middle East for example, whereas the political left would be willing to work with the UN and try to attain a peaceful settlement, the right would generally advocate an armed response specifically if they thought the USA was at risk.
The political right was normally associated with being American patriots.
Generally, the Republicans would have been seen to support the army as well as its veterans, although it is debatable whether that is still the case. They believed in a business spirit, after all this is the USA where anyone could become rich if they believe in their dreams. With the recent financial downturn, there are lots of people who believe that persons on the political right will support the capitalistic value at the expense of ordinary people's pensions and stock holdings.
Whether or not you go along with or disagree with both party, it is more than obvious that there are severe viewpoints on both sides. For instance some conservatives think that every person needs to be responsible for their own healthcare, education etc. After all if some can achieve something why can't everybody? They do not buy into the fact that some folks just are not cut out to be entrepreneurs.
